Sun International bets big on South Africa's booming online gambling market

Sun International is setting its sights on expanding its online gambling presence in South Africa. The company, which already dominates nearly half of the country’s land-based casino market, now aims to double SunBet’s online market share. This push comes as the industry braces for rapid growth in the coming years. Sun International currently operates 11 casinos across eight of South Africa’s nine provinces. Its land-based dominance contrasts with SunBet’s smaller online footprint, which holds just 4.5% of the market. To strengthen its position, the company plans to rebuild its technology stack and bring development in-house.

The South African online gambling market is expected to nearly double by 2030, reaching an estimated R100 billion in gross gaming revenue (GGR). Sun International sees this growth as an opportunity to expand organically rather than through acquisitions. Meanwhile, a recent discussion paper proposed introducing a 20% national tax on online GGR, which could reshape the industry’s financial landscape.

Online gambling in South Africa is regulated at the provincial level, though operators licensed in one province can serve customers nationwide. Sun International’s strategy focuses on improving both its casino and sportsbook platforms to attract more users. SunBet’s push to double its market share aligns with broader industry expansion. The company’s investment in technology and user experience aims to capture a larger portion of the growing online gambling sector. If successful, these changes could solidify Sun International’s position as a leader in both land-based and digital gambling markets.
