How xQc turned an esports exit into a $100M streaming empire

Streamer xQc is one of the biggest names in the global streaming scene. Between 2020 and 2022, his channel was the most-watched on Twitch, according to data from SullyGnome.com.

His reign at the top shifted in June 2023 when he signed an exclusive deal with a rival platform. The streaming service Kick secured xQc for a reported $100 million, locking him into an exclusivity agreement. Now, with his Kick contract expired, xQc has returned to Twitch. But his meteoric rise can be traced back to one pivotal moment: his dismissal from the Overwatch pro team Dallas Fuel.

Two Suspensions Paved the Way for His Twitch Career

xQc's path to success wasn't always smooth. Before becoming a full-time streamer, he was a professional player for Dallas Fuel in the Overwatch League. In January 2018, after a loss to the Houston Outlaws, xQc directed a homophobic slur at an opposing player, earning him a suspension for the current stage of the competition (PC Gamer).

He returned in early March 2018—only to be suspended again almost immediately. This time, he used a Twitch emote in a racist manner toward a moderator in the chat (PC Gamer). Days later, Dallas Fuel announced they were permanently parting ways with xQc.

In an interview with Dexerto, the former pro player admitted, "I didn't know what to do. I genuinely thought I was finished. I thought that was pretty much the end of my career."

Even before his dismissal, xQc had occasionally streamed on Twitch. But after leaving Dallas Fuel, he could fully commit to the platform—and the controversy surrounding his exit actually drew in viewers from the start. His Overwatch skills, combined with his newfound focus on streaming, propelled him to the top.

His financial success was further boosted by online casino streams, where he once gambled—and lost—€170,000 in just two minutes. Lucrative deals with online casinos helped xQc amass significant wealth.

In the end, xQc's ouster from Dallas Fuel became the catalyst for his Twitch stardom. Freed from team obligations, the now 30-year-old could dedicate himself entirely to building his brand on the platform.

While he may no longer dominate Twitch's top rankings, xQc remains a streaming powerhouse. His earnings from the platform alone are staggering: on a "bad day," his Twitch ad revenue could buy 71 PlayStation 5 consoles.
