Students can go to the ski slope in Winterberg for free - Winterberg's new scheme makes skiing affordable for young adventurers
A new initiative is bringing affordable skiing to children and teens in Winterberg. Starting in early March, discounted gear and free Lyft tickets will help schools make the most of the late-season slopes. Organisers hope the scheme will encourage more young people to try winter sports without financial barriers.
The programme kicks off between March 2 and 8 at the Altastenberg ski carousel. Ski rentals—including skis, poles, boots and helmets—will cost half price during this period. From March 16, the offer will extend to the wider Winterberg ski lift network.
School groups can also apply for free lift tickets throughout the late season. Last year, nearly 1,000 students and teachers took part, with 47 schools and educational centres from the Sauerland region joining in. Early booking is recommended, as places are limited.
Cooler weather forecasts have added to the optimism, with organisers expecting good snow conditions to last longer than usual. The scheme aims to fill unused capacity on the slopes while giving young people a chance to experience skiing regardless of their budget.
The initiative will run until the end of the season, offering both discounted equipment and free access to lifts for participating schools. With strong interest in previous years, organisers are preparing for another busy period. The focus remains on making winter sports accessible while using available resources efficiently.
