Vienna's New 'Grätzlmistplatz' Waste Center: Sustainable & Circular
Vienna has initiated plans for a new, modern waste and recycling center, dubbed the 'Grätzlmistplatz', in the Leopoldstadt district of the 2nd district. The MA 48 (Department of Waste Management, Street Cleaning, and Vehicles) is spearheading the project, which will cater to over 200,000 residents. The planning budget stands at €8 million.
The facility, slated to be built on Innstraße, will span 6,600 square meters. Sustainability is a key focus, with green roofs and facades, recycled materials, rainwater management, and solar power planned. It will also house staff accommodations for street cleaning and refuse collection workers.
The project includes noise protection measures, with comprehensive noise and emissions analysis planned. The exact construction timeline will be announced later. A first information session for local residents is scheduled for early 2026. The center will offer multifunctional services aligned with circular economy principles, such as repair cafés and swap markets.
