Vibrant Mural Honors Ottawa's First All-Chinese Hockey Team, The Chinese Aces
A vibrant new mural has brightened up Ottawa's Glebe neighborhood, depicting the city's first all-Chinese hockey team, the Manchester City Aces. Local visual artist Tia Wong created the piece, titled 'Manchester City Aces Skate the Canal', on the side of Fairy Dreams Bridal on Bank Street.
Tia Wong, a long-time Glebe resident, drew inspiration from various sources for her mural design. She incorporated the Rideau Canal, even before learning about the Manchester City Aces' story, and used old $5 bills featuring kids playing hockey and original Tim Hortons cups to evoke nostalgia.
The Manchester City Aces, active from 1941 to 1946, practised on the Rideau Canal long before it became a popular skateway. The team collected donations for war relief in China through their games, highlighting their community involvement.
The Glebe BIA played a significant role in the mural project, securing funding from the City of Ottawa and contributing funds themselves. While some Manchester City Aces members had direct connections to the Glebe, opening shops on Bank Street, information about specific players is scarce. Irene Mei, owner of Fairy Dreams Bridal, believes showcasing Ottawa's diversity through art is crucial.
The 'Manchester City Aces Skate the Canal' mural adds color and history to the Glebe neighborhood. While more historical information would be welcome, the artwork serves as a reminder of Ottawa's rich cultural heritage and the impact of the Manchester City Aces on the city.
