US Gaming Industry Sets Record with $471.8M for Safer Gambling Initiatives in 2023
The American Gaming Association (AGA) has reported a record investment in responsible gambling (RG) initiatives for 2023. The industry spent $471.8 million last year, marking a 72% increase since 2017. This surge reflects growing efforts to promote safer online games practices across the US.
The AGA’s latest figures show where the funds were allocated. The largest share, $135.4 million, went to customer service interactions aimed at preventing gambling harm. Another $122.4 million supported the development and upkeep of RG programmes, while $107.7 million funded consumer-facing education campaigns.
Research and non-profit RG organizations received $31.8 million, and problem gambling support services were granted $26.1 million. The AGA also highlighted key initiatives like Responsible Gaming Education Month (RGEM) and the Responsible Gaming Intervention Effectiveness Scale, created by Drs. Jonathan Ross Gilber and Marla Stafford. These tools aim to strengthen best practices and reduce gambling-related risks. Separately, Vixio and the National Council on Problem Gambling are currently assessing how effective individual states’ RG standards are. The review seeks to identify gaps and improve protections for gamblers nationwide. AGA’s SVP of Strategic Communications, Joe Maloney, noted that the rising RG spending proves the legal gambling sector’s dedication to fostering a safer, more sustainable environment for online games players.
The 2023 investment of $471.8 million sets a new benchmark for responsible gambling funding. With ongoing research and expanded programmes, the industry continues to prioritise harm prevention and consumer protection. The AGA’s report underscores a long-term commitment to improving RG standards across the US.
