US Department of War to Implement Elon Musk xAI's Grok Models for Military Operations
The Pentagon has awarded major contracts to four AI companies, including xAI, to boost military capabilities with advanced technology. Each firm could receive up to $200 million to develop AI systems for defence and national security. These tools will support real-world missions while handling highly sensitive data.
The move marks a significant step in integrating artificial intelligence into military operations. xAI, led by Elon Musk, will embed its Grok models into the Pentagon’s new GenAI.mil platform, designed for secure and scalable use across government agencies.
The US Department of Defense announced the contracts as part of a wider push to expand AI use in warfare and operations. Alongside xAI, OpenAI secured a $200 million deal in 2025 to upgrade Pentagon systems for critical national security tasks. These partnerships aim to create a unified AI platform capable of improving mission planning, intelligence analysis, and strategic decision-making.
xAI’s involvement will see its Grok models tailored for military applications, operating under Impact Level 5 (IL5) security—the highest classification for government data. The integration will provide AI-driven tools to roughly three million employees within the Department of War. Officials have emphasised that the technology will remain secure while enabling faster, more informed responses in high-stakes scenarios.
The Pentagon’s investment reflects a broader trend of adopting AI for defence purposes. By leveraging foundation models optimised for government use, the military expects to enhance efficiency and precision in both combat and administrative operations. The GenAI.mil platform, powered by xAI and other firms, is set to become a cornerstone of future military infrastructure.
The $200 million contracts signal a major shift toward AI-driven defence systems. With xAI’s Grok models now part of the Pentagon’s operations, military personnel will gain access to advanced tools for planning and intelligence. The initiative also sets a precedent for how large-scale AI platforms could reshape modern warfare in the coming years.
