UK casino recovery stalls as Rank Group reports uneven financial results
The Rank Group has reported mixed financial results as the UK casino sector struggles to recover from pandemic losses. While some areas show growth, London's casinos continue to lag behind due to weaker international visitor numbers and policy changes.
The company now looks ahead to upcoming gambling reforms, expected by summer 2024, which could provide much-needed support for the industry.
In its latest financial update, Rank Group revealed a 7% rise in net gaming revenue for FY 2022, reaching £679.7 million. However, this figure remains 15% below pre-pandemic levels. Operating profit also fell sharply to £20.3 million—less than half of the £39 million recorded in FY 2021.
Recent weeks have shown uneven progress. While Mecca Bingo saw a 17% revenue boost, driven by higher demand for indoor entertainment, Rank's casinos managed only a 5% increase. Grosvenor casinos reported a 7% rise in customer visits, but London venues continue to underperform compared to the rest of the UK.
The slow recovery in London is partly due to fewer foreign high-rollers, who now favour destinations like Paris and Milan. The removal of tax-free shopping in the UK has also hit spending in the capital's casinos, though no specific data exists on how this has affected profit margins or average bets per player.
Industry analysts suggest the upcoming gambling reforms could help stabilise the sector. These changes, expected by mid-2024, aim to address long-standing challenges in the UK casino market.
Rank Group's latest figures highlight a divided recovery, with bingo halls outperforming casinos. London's gambling scene remains particularly weak, facing competition from European rivals and policy hurdles.
The company will now focus on the planned reforms, hoping they can revive growth in a sector still feeling the effects of the pandemic and regulatory shifts.
