THW deploys massive pumps to battle Gohrischheide wildfires with 25,000L/min water supply

The THW is currently supporting firefighting efforts in the Gohrischheide area by pumping water from a gravel pit in Boragk. Using a 2.5-kilometre hose line, the team is supplying vital extinguishing water to fire departments and local farmers. This operation highlights the organisation’s role in managing large-scale emergencies with specialised equipment.

A key part of the THW’s response involves the specialist group Water Damage/Pumps. This unit operates nationwide, with over 80 teams trained to handle flooding, water removal, and sewage system repairs. In Gohrischheide, they are deploying a large dirty water pump capable of moving up to 25,000 litres per minute, alongside smaller pumps with a combined capacity of around 12,000 litres per minute.

The ongoing operation in Gohrischheide demonstrates the THW’s capability to support emergency services during complex incidents. By providing a steady supply of extinguishing water, the organisation helps contain fires and protect affected areas. For specific details about the specialist unit in Saxony and Thuringia, direct contact with the THW state association remains the best option.
