Texas A&M Professor Fired for Teaching Intersex and LGBTQ+ Topics
A Texas A&M professor has been dismissed for discussing intersex and LGBTQ+ topics in a literature class. The professor, who was teaching ENGL 360: Literature for Children, was fired after a student complained about discussions on 'gender and sexuality' and 'gender ideology'. The professor had been advocating for academic freedom and the rights of intersex and LGBTQ+ individuals, feeling pressured to teach a lie about bodies to avoid discussing the biological reality of intersex people, fearing repercussions from federal edicts and campaigns against universities. The student who filed the complaint expressed concerns that the discussions went against their religious beliefs and former President Trump's views on gender. The professor was eventually terminated for not adhering to the course description. However, they argued that a description is a broad overview, not a script, and should not restrict honest teaching about these topics. The professor's dismissal has sparked debate about academic freedom and the role of educators in discussing sensitive topics. Intersex scholar-activist Georgiann Davis, affiliated with the University of New Mexico, has written about the incident, highlighting the importance of honest education and the protection of marginalized communities.
