Syracuse Charity Expands Services with Medical Van for Homeless
In My Father's Kitchen, a Syracuse-based charity, has expanded its services to include a medical van, offering on-the-spot medical care to the homeless population. Founded by John Tumino, the organisation has helped over 430 individuals secure permanent housing and provides meals, medical care, and support programmes.
John Tumino left his successful restaurant business after a life-changing encounter with a homeless man named Tim. Inspired, he started In My Father's Kitchen to support the homeless in Syracuse. The organisation operates a street outreach programme twice a week, delivering fresh meals to build trust and encourage individuals to move into housing. It also runs the Hire Ground day labour programme, offering work opportunities to those who might otherwise be panhandling.
In addition to these services, In My Father's Kitchen provides medical care through a mobile medical van. This expansion allows the organisation to assist individuals in need more comprehensively. The team, led by John Tumino and Jerry, has grown over the years, enabling the organisation to help a significant number of people. Despite challenges, including the loss of 93 individuals over the years, the organisation remains committed to its mission.
