Success Universe reports HKD 410.4M loss after Macau casino closure
Success Universe Group has reported a net loss of HKD 410.4 million (USD 52.4 million) for the fiscal year 2025. This marks a sharp reversal from the HKD 93.4 million (USD 11.9 million) profit recorded in 2024. The company attributed much of the loss to the closure of Casino Ponte 16 in Macau last November. The closure of Ponte 16 casino on 29 November 2025 triggered a major financial hit. An impairment charge of HKD 340.7 million (USD 43.5 million) was recorded, accounting for roughly 83% of the Group's total annual loss. Additionally, the company booked a prorated loss of HKD 3.8 million (USD 485,000) from its associates linked to the casino.
Despite the setback, Success Universe saw growth in other areas. Revenues from its travel services, property investments, and financial assets rose by about 16% year-on-year, reaching HKD 59.7 million (USD 7.6 million). However, the company warned that the shutdown of Ponte 16 would continue to negatively impact its share of results from associates. Earlier plans for a full acquisition of Ponte 16 by SJM Resorts Limited fell through. Instead, SJM acquired L'Arc Casino, leaving the future of Ponte 16 uncertain. Success Universe has not disclosed any changes to the project's strategic direction or new hospitality and leisure developments in Macau. The Group, however, remains committed to the investment and will focus on maximising the value of its non-gaming assets.
The financial results for 2025 highlight the heavy impact of Ponte 16's closure on Success Universe's performance. With no immediate plans announced for the site, the company's focus shifts to its other business segments. The Group's next steps will likely depend on how it manages its remaining assets in Macau and beyond.
