Southern Ohio church to co-host memorial service for people who died homeless in 2025

Columbus is facing a growing homelessness crisis, with numbers rising sharply in 2025. A recent count found 2,556 people without housing—a 7.4% increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, at least 168 unhoused individuals have died in the city this year alone, up from 112 in 2024.

The Community Shelter Board’s 2025 point-in-time count confirmed the worsening situation. Over 2,550 people were recorded as experiencing homelessness in early January, reflecting a steady climb in need. Experts warn that without intervention, homelessness could surge by nearly 70% in the next five years due to rising living costs, stagnant wages, and a shortage of affordable housing.

In response, Trinity Episcopal Church has long supported unhoused residents through weekly services. These include a 'needs' pantry, community lunches, limited financial aid, and Narcan distribution to combat overdoses. The church also reserves 10% of its columbarium for those who died while homeless, ensuring they receive the same dignity in death as others. To honour the 168 lives lost this year, Trinity Episcopal Church and the Columbus Coalition for the Homeless will hold an interfaith memorial service on December 18. The event, timed near the winter solstice, symbolises the 'darkness' many feel when facing homelessness or grief. Franklin County Coroner Nathaniel Overmire will deliver a keynote speech, while attendees will hear each name read aloud, followed by a bell toll, candle lighting, and a choir performance.

The memorial service will provide a moment of reflection for a crisis that continues to deepen. With homelessness projected to rise further, local organisations and the community face mounting pressure to address housing instability and its deadly consequences. The event serves as both a tribute and a call for action.
