Ryder Cup chaos: Rory McIlroy faces hecklers as Europe triumphs amid fan fury
The 43rd Ryder Cup, held at the Bethpage Black course, saw its fair share of drama both on and off the course. Spectators' behaviour drew attention, with Rory McIlroy and other players having to deal with heckles and confrontations. Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump responded to a taunting video message from the victorious European team.
McIlroy, the European team's captain, joked about the heavy security presence, saying he wished 'they had let the dogs off the leashes'. However, the event took a more serious turn when a spectator, later identified as Heather McMahan, led a chant of 'f*ck you Rory'. McMahan has since apologized and stepped down from her role.
McIlroy's wife, Erica, also found herself in an uncomfortable situation when beer was thrown at her. Despite the incident, she was reported to be 'fine'. McIlroy himself had to tell a spectator to 'shut the f*ck up' during the event. Despite searches, no further details about the spectator involved in this confrontation have been found.
The European team, celebrating their victory, sent a video message to Trump, chanting 'Are you watching, are you watching, are you watching, Donald Trump?'. Trump responded with a simple 'Yes, I'm watching. Congratulations!' to the team.
On the course, Bryson DeChambeau confronted Justin Rose after Rose asked DeChambeau's caddie to move while he was lining up a putt. Multiple spectators were ejected from the event due to their behaviour. McIlroy also faced boos and heckles from spectators throughout the event.
The 2021 Ryder Cup will be remembered not just for the golf, but also for the behaviour of some spectators. Despite the disruptions, the event concluded with the European team's victory, and Trump's response added a political note to the proceedings.
