Rumotel faces AU$2M in fines over alleged gambling rule violations

Rumotel Pty Ltd is facing legal action after Victoria’s gambling regulator filed 38 charges against the company. The allegations centre on failures to meet responsible gambling rules, including staff training and monitoring systems. If convicted, the operator could pay fines exceeding AU$2 million.

The Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) has accused Rumotel of 35 breaches related to its YourPlay programme and employee training. These systems are designed to help patrons track their gambling and encourage safer play. The regulator claims the company did not properly implement the required measures.

Three further charges allege violations of the Responsible Gambling Code of Conduct. Rumotel is accused of not having a Responsible Gambling Officer on site at all times during operating hours. The company also allegedly failed to maintain a register of incidents where patrons showed signs of excessive gambling or distress. Under Victorian law, operators must keep such records and have trained staff available to intervene. The VGCCC has warned that fines could reach AU$1,386,900 for the three additional charges alone. If found guilty on all 38 counts, the total penalty may climb to AU$2,145,072. This follows recent action against other operators, including Tabcorp, which was accused last month of allowing underage gambling.

A court will now decide whether Rumotel breached gambling regulations. The case highlights the VGCCC’s focus on enforcing responsible gambling rules across Victoria. If penalties are applied, the operator will be required to pay the full amount set by the commission.
