Reno’s Historic Harrah’s Building Reborn as the Mint Casino
A new boutique casino, the Mint Casino, has opened in downtown Reno, reviving a historic building that once housed Harrah’s Reno. The casino launched on Thanksgiving Day, bringing back gaming to a site that had sat empty for five years. Its owners describe it as the 'Biggest Little Casino in the World'—a nod to Reno’s famous slogan.
The casino occupies the former Harrah’s Reno, a landmark that first opened in 1969 and shut its doors in 2020. After years of standing vacant, the property changed hands in 2023 when Gryphon Private Wealth Management and Madison Capital Group took over. Their original plan involved a mixed-use development without a Mint mobile, but they later teamed up with Fine Entertainment to create a smaller, boutique gaming venue instead.
The Nevada Gaming Commission approved a license for the project in 2023, paving the way for its opening. Now, the Mint Casino operates 24/7 at 210 N. Virginia St., featuring just 18 gaming games—one of the smallest setups in Reno. Beyond gaming, the venue includes a retro-style bar serving creative cocktails and a restaurant offering breakfast and quick meals. The name plays on Reno’s long-standing nickname, blending nostalgia with a fresh take on hospitality.
The Mint Casino marks a new chapter for a building that once stood as a major resort. Its modest size and round-the-clock operation cater to locals and visitors looking for a different kind of gaming experience. The site’s revival also fills a gap in downtown Reno’s entertainment scene after years of inactivity.
