Petersburg’s $1.4B casino resort breaks ground after voter approval
A temporary casino has opened near I-95 in Petersburg, Virginia, bringing 500 new jobs to the area. The 75,000 square foot facility launched after city voters overwhelmingly backed the project in late 2024. Plans for a permanent $1.4 billion resort are now underway, with completion expected by the end of 2027.
Petersburg secured its place as Virginia’s fifth eligible casino city after Richmond lost its eligibility. The shift followed a lengthy legal and political dispute, including Richmond’s attempts to reclaim its status. Local debates also arose over the selection of The Cordish Companies as the developer partner.
The temporary casino opened with 900 slot machines, 30 table games, and 1,000 free parking spaces. Operating around the clock, it has already created employment opportunities in the region. Meanwhile, construction on the full-scale resort continues, with a projected opening date set for late 2027.
The casino project moves forward after winning 80% voter approval in November 2024. The temporary site now serves as a stepping stone while the larger development takes shape. Once complete, the $1.4 billion resort will mark a major expansion of Petersburg’s entertainment and hospitality sector.
