Ottawa Senators Cut Alex Formenton After 2018 Assault Acquittal
The Ottawa Senators have parted ways with Alex Formenton, a former player who was among five members of Canada's 2018 world junior hockey championship team acquitted of sexual assault charges. The decision has sparked debate among fans about the role of off-ice conduct and the influence of past incidents on a player's career.
The trial, which stemmed from an encounter in a hotel room with a woman in 2018, ended with all accused being acquitted due to the complainant's evidence not being found credible or reliable. However, the incident has continued to cast a shadow over the players involved. Formenton, who is currently playing with HC Ambri-Piotta in Switzerland, was the only player publicly named in connection with the case.
The NHL announced on Sept. 11 that players would be eligible to sign with NHL teams starting on Oct. 15 and able to play in the league starting Dec. 1. However, the Senators decided not to re-sign Formenton, a move that has been met with mixed reactions from fans. Some, like Wadane Sougoufara, initially felt disappointed but agreed with the decision due to the importance of players' off-ice conduct as role models for youth. Others, like Joan Wiggins, felt the team's decision should have aligned more closely with the court's ruling, suggesting Formenton should have been given a chance to prove himself with the AHL affiliate team.
The Ottawa Senators have chosen to move on from Alex Formenton, a decision that reflects the importance they place on the off-ice conduct of their players. While the court acquitted the players involved in the 2018 incident, the Senators have opted to prioritize the reputation and values of their organization. Formenton, who is currently under contract with HC Ambri-Piotta until December, will now look to continue his career elsewhere.
