Ottawa casino's Chinese-language ads spark gambling addiction concerns amid expansion
A new advertising campaign by Rideau Carlton Raceway has sparked concerns in Ottawa. The casino's ads, mostly in Chinese, promote games like pai gow and mini baccarat. Critics warn the campaign could worsen gambling issues in the local Chinese community.
The ads appeared on billboards and bus shelters across the city, including in Chinatown. Casino officials insist they are not targeting any single group, claiming their marketing reaches all communities.
The campaign comes as the casino plans a major expansion. A $318 million project will add 750 slot machines, 20 gaming tables, a 200-room hotel, and a 2,500-seat theatre. A new 'Asian-inspired gaming area' is also part of the upgrade. Anna Wong, executive director of Chinese Family Services of Ontario, has raised concerns. She believes the ads could increase gambling problems among Chinese residents. A recent Ottawa Public Health study supports her worries, showing a higher addiction rate in the Chinese community (2.9%) compared to the general population (1.2%).
The casino's expansion and ad campaign continue despite the criticism. No public data tracks how the Chinese community's reaction has changed since the campaign began in 2018. The debate over its impact remains unresolved.
