Nigeria's Tinubu Strengthens UK Ties with Historic Royal State Visit

Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu completed a high-profile state visit to the United Kingdom in late 2024, marking his second official trip to the country since taking office in May 2023. The three-day event included royal ceremonies, a carriage procession, and a grand State Banquet at Windsor Castle, reinforcing diplomatic ties between the two nations.

The visit began with a formal Ceremonial Welcome at Datchet Road, Windsor, where President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu were greeted with full royal honours. A 21-gun Royal Salute echoed across Home Park in Windsor and the Tower of London, honouring the Nigerian delegation.

A stately carriage procession then carried The King, The Queen, the President, the First Lady, the Prince of Wales, and the Princess of Wales to Windsor Castle. Along the route, crowds lined the streets to witness the historic moment. At Windsor Castle, the King and Queen warmly received the Tinubus at the Royal Dais before hosting them in the Green Drawing Room. There, they viewed a curated exhibition from the Royal Collection, showcasing artefacts linked to Nigeria's history and cultural ties with Britain. The President and First Lady also visited St George's Chapel, where they laid a wreath at the Tomb of Queen Elizabeth II in a solemn tribute. The day's events culminated in a lavish State Banquet inside Windsor Castle, attended by senior members of the Royal Family. Both The King and President Tinubu delivered speeches, emphasising themes of friendship, cooperation, and a shared future between Nigeria and the UK. Earlier, the Prince and Princess of Wales had greeted the delegation on behalf of The King, while the President also held a private audience with His Majesty. This visit formed part of Tinubu's broader diplomatic engagements, with 12 official state visits completed by March 2026, including trips to France, the United States, India, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Germany, China, Brazil, Russia, and Japan.

The state visit concluded with strengthened diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the UK, highlighted by ceremonial traditions and high-level discussions. The events at Windsor Castle, including the banquet and private meetings, underscored the importance of bilateral cooperation moving forward. By March 2026, President Tinubu's international engagements had spanned five continents, reflecting Nigeria's active role on the global stage.
