Nice’s €138M Olympic ice rink divides critics and supporters ahead of 2030

Plans for a new €138 million ice rink in Nice ahead of the 2030 Winter Olympics have sparked debate. Frédéric Maillot, a French lawmaker, called the project a waste of public money, questioning why a permanent venue was needed when other cities already had suitable facilities. Supporters, however, argue the rink will bring long-term benefits beyond the Games.

The proposed rink forms part of a wider €218 million investment, which also includes upgrades to the Allianz Riviera stadium. Maillot criticised the spending as reckless, suggesting that ice hockey events could instead be held in Paris or Lyon—both set to host the World Hockey Championships in 2028.

The dispute over the Nice rink centres on cost versus legacy. While critics push for alternative locations, backers insist the investment will leave a lasting sports complex. The final decision will shape how the 2030 Winter Olympics are staged—and funded—in the region.
