Nice’s €138M Olympic Ice Hub Divides Critics and Supporters Ahead of 2030

Plans for a new ice sports hub in Nice ahead of the 2030 Winter Olympics have sparked debate over costs and necessity. The €138 million project includes a permanent rink and temporary facilities, but critics argue it duplicates existing venues in Marseille and Pralognan-la-Vanoise. Supporters, however, insist the complex will bring long-term benefits to the region.

Frédéric Maillot, a French lawmaker, criticised the funding for the Nice hockey venue, calling it a reckless use of public money. He suggested Paris or Lyon as more suitable locations for the events. Maillot also questioned why a news rink was needed when existing facilities in Marseille and Pralognan-la-Vanoise were already available.

Renaud Muselier, president of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, defended the project. He compared it to the Paris 2024 swimming pool and Adidas Arena, both of which were costly but now serve as valuable community assets. According to Muselier, the Nice ice sports hub would function as a lasting sports complex, benefiting the entire metropolitan area.

Sports Minister Marina Ferrari clarified that the Nice rink would be the only new sports facility built for the 2030 Games. All other venues would rely on existing infrastructure. The project includes covering the Allianz Riviera stadium with a roof, installing two temporary rinks, and constructing a new permanent rink. Officials also expect Nice and its ice sports hub to generate 60% of the Games' ticket revenue.

The €138 million investment remains controversial, with critics highlighting potential waste and supporters emphasising long-term regional benefits. The final decision will determine whether the Nice ice sports hub proceeds as planned or faces further scrutiny over its funding and purpose.
