New Global Initiative Aims to Revolutionize Safer Gambling with Anonymous Self-Exclusion

A new push for safer gambling has gained momentum with the launch of the Global Self-Exclusion Initiative. Developed by Casino Guru and BetBlocker, the scheme aims to help users block gambling access anonymously across the world. Industry experts have now gathered to discuss its potential impact and the steps needed for wider adoption.

The initiative was a key topic at this year’s Safer Gambling Week 2024, where organisations highlighted the importance of education and collaboration to make self-exclusion tools more effective.

The Global Self-Exclusion Initiative was introduced as a joint effort between Casino Guru and BetBlocker. During a webinar titled The Art of Blocking: Self-Exclusion Tools, Simon Vincze and Duncan Garvie explained how the BetBlocker app allows users to restrict gambling access without revealing their identity. The tool is designed to work globally, offering a simple way for people to take control of their habits.

At the same event, hosted by Casino Guru in partnership with BetBlocker, five experts shared their views on improving self-exclusion measures. Katie Reynolds-Jones from GAMSTOP stressed the need for lifelong exclusion options, along with regular data updates to keep restrictions in place. Meanwhile, Kate Graham from Monzo talked about finding a balance between strict blocking tools and giving players flexibility, such as longer cooldown periods before reactivation.

The webinar was part of Safer Gambling Week 2024, organised by the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA). The week featured multiple initiatives aimed at promoting responsible gambling, with a focus on raising awareness about available support tools. Industry leaders agreed that for the Global Self-Exclusion Initiative to succeed, both operators and players must be educated on its benefits and usage.

The Global Self-Exclusion Initiative now requires widespread industry support to reach its full potential. Operators and regulators will need to adopt the tool and promote its use among customers. Without broader education and collaboration, its ability to reduce gambling harm on a global scale may remain limited.
