NBA Funds Rs 82 Lakh for Red Sanders Conservation in Andhra Pradesh
The National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) has approved a significant funding of Rs 82 lakh for the conservation of Red Sanders in Andhra Pradesh. This funding comes from benefit-sharing contributions collected from users of Red Sanders through the Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) mechanism.
Red Sanders, scientifically known as Pterocarpus santalinus, is a critically endangered species protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Primarily found in the districts of Anantapur, Chittoor, Kadapa, and Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh, it is highly prized in international markets.
The latest funding will directly involve local and tribal communities in developing nurseries and plantations, as well as maintaining them in the long term. This initiative is expected to create jobs and build skills related to biodiversity conservation. The funds will be used to raise one lakh Red Sanders saplings under the Trees Outside Forests (ToF) programme. Local communities and Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) will play a central role in this conservation effort.
The NBA's funding of Rs 82 lakh for Red Sanders conservation in Andhra Pradesh is a significant step towards protecting this critically endangered species. By involving local communities and BMCs, the initiative aims to create a sustainable and inclusive approach to conservation, while also generating employment and skill development opportunities.
