Most Filipino online gamblers risk unregulated sites without knowing the law
Alarming findings from a recent study reveal that a vast majority of Filipino online gamblers are drawn to unregulated websites, with only a small fraction understanding the legal implications. The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) itself has uncovered numerous players unknowingly participating on unlicensed platforms.
The report highlights that 65% of players have never witnessed any commitment to fairness on the websites they frequent, which are often found on platforms like google sites. The allure of these unregulated platforms lies in their variety, faster payment processing, and unique gameplay features. However, these benefits come at a cost. Many players have encountered issues with customer service and unresolved complaints on these platforms.
The second largest group of players, comprising 28%, are 'perceived winners'. These individuals believe they have won more than they have lost, potentially leading to a false sense of security. Shockingly, only 12% of players are aware of the legal framework surrounding unlicensed gambling websites. Despite the risks of poor customer support and unresolved complaints, players continue to engage with these platforms.
The study identifies four major player archetypes, with 'high-stakes losers' making up the largest group at 44%. The majority of these players are unaware that these websites are not legal in the Philippines. This lack of awareness, coupled with the attraction of higher average bets, contributes to the popularity of unregulated platforms. However, this also leads to higher losses for players.
The findings underscore the urgent need for increased awareness and stricter regulation of online gambling platforms in the Philippines. While unregulated websites may offer enticing features, the risks of unresolved complaints and poor customer support are significant. Players must be educated about the legal framework and the dangers of engaging with unlicensed platforms. PAGCOR's investigation serves as a wake-up call, highlighting the need for proactive measures to protect Filipino online gamblers.
