Miriam Adelson reshapes GOP funding after inheriting Sheldon's empire
Dr. Miriam Adelson has become one of the most influential political donors in the Republican Party since her husband Sheldon Adelson's death in 2021. The 77-year-old inherited a controlling stake in Las Vegas Sands and has continued the family's tradition of large-scale political contributions.
Sheldon Adelson, the casino magnate, passed away on January 11, 2021, at 87 after battling non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. His death left Miriam Adelson as the largest shareholder of Las Vegas Sands, holding roughly 52.2% of the company. Despite her wealth dropping from over $38 billion in 2021 to $27.5 billion, she remains one of the world's richest individuals.
In 2022, she donated $10 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, split into two $5 million payments. While this was less than the $122 million she and her late husband gave in the 2018 midterms, her contributions still ranked among the highest for individual donors. Beyond Super-PACs, she has directly funded Republican campaigns, particularly during the 2022 midterms and the 2024 presidential race.
Her political spending aligns with other casino billionaires, including Steve Wynn, the Fertitta brothers, Tilman Fertitta, and Phil Ruffin, who also backed Republican candidates in 2022. Despite shifts in her net worth, Adelson has maintained her commitment to supporting Republican-aligned politicians.
Adelson's financial influence within the Republican Party remains strong, even as her wealth fluctuates. Her donations continue to shape campaign funding, reinforcing the family's long-standing role in conservative politics. The 2024 election cycle is likely to see further contributions from her and other high-profile casino industry donors.
