Mettmann's Historic Schloss Hardenberg Transforms into Nature Discovery Center
Mettmann District is transforming the historic Schloss Hardenberg site into a modern Nature Discovery Center, led by Dr. Bettina Warneke, the District Administrator. The €1.1 million project aims to revitalize the landmark, boost tourism, and educate visitors about nature and environmental protection.
The new center will replace the previously quiet site with an engaging nature discovery experience. The exhibition 'Our Resilient Nature' will connect the site's history with contemporary issues like biodiversity and climate change. The outdoor grounds will be enhanced with new pond areas, play and relaxation zones, and an outdoor café by the mill.
The center will span 5.5 hectares and host environmental education programs, workshops, and events for all ages. It will also integrate the Neanderland region, featuring a visitor service point highlighting its unique attractions. Mayor Dirk Lukrafka of Velbert praised the project's significance in restoring an important landmark and driving sustainable urban development through regional cooperation.
Mettmann District's investment of €1.1 million in the Schloss Hardenberg Nature Discovery Center is set to revitalize the historic site, boost tourism, and expand educational offerings on environmental and climate protection. District Administrator Thomas Hendele expressed delight in the project's potential to create a new hub for nature experiences and sustainable tourism.
