A highly anticipated boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor is set for 26 August. The event has drawn attention for its unusual pairing—a retired boxing legend against a UFC champion. Yet ticket sales and pay-per-view interest face challenges due to high costs and lopsided odds.

Floyd Mayweather, with a flawless 49-0 record, enters the bout as the overwhelming favourite. Bookmakers list him at -700, while McGregor sits at +500. The mismatch in experience has led to concerns about a one-sided contest.

Conor McGregor, the UFC lightweight champion, holds a 21-3 MMA record, with 18 wins by knockout. Despite his striking power, he has never competed in professional boxing. His last UFC fight was in November 2016, and a loss to Mayweather could weaken his marketability—and the UFC's pay-per-view appeal. The fight's pay-per-view price is set at $99.95 on Showtime, a steep cost for an event many expect to end quickly. Ticket sales at Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena have also struggled, partly due to high prices and scepticism over the matchup's competitiveness. Outside the ring, McGregor has secured a two-year deal with Wynn Nightlife. He will host events at XS Nightclub and Encore Beach Club, starting with a party at Encore Beach Club the night of the fight. The agreement includes up to four more appearances through 2019. Ronda Rousey's 2016 defeat to Amanda Nunes serves as a cautionary tale. Once a UFC draw, her pay-per-view value plummeted after the loss, and she has not fought since. A similar outcome for McGregor could have lasting effects on the UFC's business model.

The Mayweather vs. McGregor fight carries high stakes beyond the ring. A decisive victory for Mayweather could diminish McGregor's star power, impacting UFC's revenue from pay-per-view events. Meanwhile, the fighter's nightlife partnership ensures his presence in Las Vegas extends beyond combat sports.
