Maurice Hawkins and Denise Pratt Settle Poker Backing Dispute Without Clear Fault
A financial dispute between poker player Maurice Hawkins and backer Denise Pratt has ended with no clear fault assigned. The mediator’s findings, shared by Hawkins on social media, revealed ambiguity in the evidence. Both sides have now agreed to drop further claims against each other.
The conflict began after Pratt loaned Hawkins around $11,000, which he failed to repay. Pratt argued that Hawkins had breached their backing agreement. The disagreement later escalated when Pratt accused him of violating a non-disclosure agreement by publicly posting the arbitrator’s summary.
The mediator reviewed text messages and other evidence but found them inconclusive. No definitive fault was placed on either party. Hawkins, who has 21 Circuit rings and over $6.7 million in live tournament earnings, also settled a separate 2019 judgment with Randy Garcia. Under the new terms, he will repay $40,000 at a rate of $2,500 per month. Garcia had previously accused Hawkins of refusing to repay backers. Despite past disputes, the recent mediation led to a mutual decision to move forward without further legal action.
The mediator’s ruling leaves the financial dispute unresolved but closes the case. Hawkins and Pratt will not pursue additional claims. Meanwhile, Hawkins continues to address past debts, including the ongoing repayment plan with Garcia.
