Marseille's managerial gamble: Can Habib Beye save their season?
Olympique de Marseille has undergone another managerial change after a turbulent season. Roberto De Zerbi, once brought in to signal grand ambition, left following a string of poor results. His replacement, Habib Beye, now faces the challenge of turning things around with little time to prepare.
De Zerbi took charge in June 2024, aiming to push Marseille into European contention. Early signs were promising, with standout performances from key players. Mason Greenwood scored 44 goals and provided 15 assists in 68 games, while Pierre-Emile Højbjerg added 6 goals and 8 assists in 62 appearances. Geronimo Rulli also contributed 11 clean sheets in 60 matches.
But results took a sharp downturn in early 2026. A humiliating 5-0 defeat to PSG on February 8 was followed by a 2-2 draw against Strasbourg. The final blow came with Champions League failure, prompting De Zerbi's departure on February 11. The club now sits outside the Ligue 1 top three and must also focus on the Coupe de France.
Habib Beye has stepped in as the new manager, but his task is daunting. Unlike his predecessor, he had minimal time to shape the squad or implement his tactics. The pressure is immediate, as managers live and die by results, regardless of long-term plans.
The role itself is unforgiving. Managers must face the media before and after every match, answering questions on everything from team performance to broader football issues. If the team fails, the blame falls squarely on them. Success often hinges on fine margins—a wavering foot in front of goal or a moment of defensive hesitation can define a season.
Marseille's new manager must now stabilise the team and secure a top-three finish. Beye's lack of preparation time adds to the challenge, but the demands remain the same: win matches and keep the fans engaged. The club's season now rests on his ability to deliver under pressure.
