Linz Airport’s €8M subsidy sparks fresh funding debate over economic impact

On Tuesday, Professor Dr. Markus Leitner presented findings on the airport’s economic significance. His study, alongside research by economist Teodoro Cocca, showed that Linz Airport generates €128.5 million in regional value. For every euro earned at the airport, an additional 71 cents flow into other local sectors. Directly, the facility employed 174 staff (160 full-time) by late 2024, while supporting 1,713 full-time jobs in the wider area.

The €8 million injection aims to keep Linz Airport operational while debates over its long-term funding continue. Studies underline its economic benefits, but political divisions persist over how public money should be spent. Future decisions will depend on route expansion and cost projections in the coming years.
