Linden Farm Opens as Surrey's First Autism-Specialist Housing Development

A specialist residential development for adults with severe autism has opened in Alfold, Surrey. Called Linden Farm, the project provides tailored housing for ten residents. Planning began in 2015, with construction starting in early 2018. The idea for Linden Farm was first proposed by The Simon Trust to Surrey County Council in 2015. Together, they acquired the land and developed the site to meet the needs of its future tenants. Fundraising efforts by the trust raised significant funds to support the project.

Building work commenced in January 2018, with careful attention given to the design. The structures blend with the local village character while maximising the natural surroundings of historic Alfold and its woodland. The development includes a three-person house, a two-person house, and five individual flats. Beyond housing, The Simon Trust has added specialised facilities. These include a horticultural area and sensory equipment to support residents' well-being. Tenants began moving in during spring and summer 2019. Since Linden Farm's completion, Surrey County Council's Supported Independent Living Programme has expanded. A similar scheme in Horley, finished in October 2025, now offers 16 homes with self-contained apartments, shared townhouses, sensory gardens, and eco-friendly features for adults with learning disabilities and autism.

Linden Farm set a precedent for autism-friendly housing in Surrey. Its success led to further developments, including the Horley scheme, which provides additional supported living options. Both projects aim to create safe, adaptable environments for residents with complex needs.
