Las Vegas Hotels Sued Over Legionnaires' Disease Death After Repeated Bacteria Findings
A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against South Point Hotel Casino Las Vegas and The Grandview at Las Vegas. The estate of Gary Curtis Jones claims he died after exposure to Legionnaires' disease during his stay at both properties in March 2023. The legal action accuses the hotels and their parent companies of gross negligence in controlling the bacteria.
Jones visited The Grandview and South Point in early 2023. Shortly after returning to Alabama, he developed symptoms and was later diagnosed with Legionnaires' disease. He died on April 2, 2023.
The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) tested the water systems at South Point following Jones' diagnosis. Their investigation confirmed the presence of Legionella bacteria. The lawsuit also highlights earlier cases at The Grandview, where water samples tested positive for Legionella in 2022 and 2025.
Further SNHD inspections in 2024 and 2025 again detected Legionella at South Point. The lawsuit argues that the hotels failed to meet proper standards for preventing Legionella contamination. No additional legal actions related to Legionella at these properties have been publicly recorded since 2022.
The case centres on allegations that South Point and The Grandview did not take adequate steps to control Legionella in their water systems. Public health records show repeated detections of the bacteria at both locations. The lawsuit seeks accountability for Jones' death and the claimed negligence.
