Las Vegas gears up for casino demolition and the 2026 poker Main Event
Las Vegas is preparing for two major events in the coming months. The Eastside Cannery, shut since 2014, will be demolished in early March. Meanwhile, the 57th World Series of Poker has announced its 2026 schedule, with the Main Event set for July.
The Eastside Cannery's 16-storey tower will be imploded on March 5 at 2 a.m. This marks the first casino demolition since the Tropicana was brought down in October 2024. Boyd Gaming, the site's owner, has sold the land to a residential developer. No public viewing areas will be available for the event.
The World Series of Poker will run from May 26 to July 15, 2026. The Main Event takes place from July 2 to 13, though its final table will be played at a later, still unconfirmed date. This year also brings a change to slot machine rules: the jackpot reporting threshold has risen from $1,200 to $2,000. Any win of $2,000 or more now requires ID and a W-2G form.
Elsewhere, the Wheel of Fortune slot machine celebrated its 30th anniversary last month. Since its launch, it has created over 1,200 millionaires and paid out more than $3.6 billion in jackpots. The largest win remains $14.4 million, claimed in Biloxi, Mississippi.
The Eastside Cannery's implosion will clear space for new housing, while the World Series of Poker prepares for its summer tournament. Slot players will now face a higher reporting limit for big wins. These changes reflect ongoing shifts in Las Vegas's gaming and development landscape.
