Lancaster mourns Dawn Derck, a devoted mother and healthcare hero
Dawn Elaine (Hostetter) High Derck of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, passed away on January 22, 2026. A devoted mother, healthcare worker, and passionate gardener, she left behind a legacy of care for both her family and community. Friends and relatives will gather to honour her life at a service later this month.
Dawn was born the eldest daughter of James D. Hostetter and Betty Jane Miller Hostetter Stauffer. She graduated from Lampeter-Strasburg High School before earning her License in Practical Nursing. Her professional life included roles at Lancaster Osteopathic Hospital, as well as service as an EMT for West End Ambulance and Manheim Township Ambulance Association.
Her faith played an important part in her life. She spent her early years at Neffsville Mennonite Church and later attended Faith United Methodist Church. Beyond her career and spiritual commitments, Dawn was known for her love of gardening, belonging to the Garden Club and the Susquehanna Unit of the Society of Herbs. She also enjoyed cooking and often hosted gatherings for family and friends.
Dawn was the wife of the late Robert Ira Derck. She is survived by her three children—Steven Dale High, Gregory Allen High, and Suzanne Marie High—as well as numerous grandchildren and step-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life service will take place on January 31, 2026, at 10:30 AM at the Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory in Lancaster. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory can be made to The Boys and Girls Club of Lancaster.
Dawn's passing leaves a lasting impact on those who knew her, from her family to the communities she served. The upcoming service will provide an opportunity for loved ones to reflect on her dedication to healthcare, gardening, and bringing people together. Donations to the Boys and Girls Club will continue her support for local youth.
