January brings a rich harvest of seasonal produce across the US. From vibrant citrus and exotic fruits to hearty root vegetables, markets are stocked with fresh, flavourful options. Growers in Florida, California, Texas, and Arizona lead the way in supplying winter favourites.

Citrus takes centre stage this month, with Florida oranges and grapefruits joining California’s Kishu mandarins, Kumquats, and Sumo Citrus. Meyer lemons and Pomelos also reach their peak, offering bright, tangy flavours. Meanwhile, Florida strawberries and California kiwis add a sweet touch to winter dishes.

Exotic fruits like lychee, Shingo pears, and jackfruit are now at their best. Apples and pears—including Comice, Cosmic Crisp, and Lucy Glo varieties—remain plentiful and full of flavour. For a spicy kick, fresh turmeric and ginger root are widely available. Vegetables thrive in the cold months too. Brassicas such as cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and kale are crisp and nutritious. Chicories like Belgian endive, radicchio, and castelfranco radicchio bring colour and texture to salads. Root vegetables—celeriac, beets, turnips, rutabaga, and specialty radishes—store well and add depth to meals. Winter squash varieties, from delicata to blue hubbard, stay in season through March. Potatoes of all kinds—mixed baby, purple, fingerlings, and specialty types—are also abundant.

The month offers a diverse range of produce, from zesty citrus to hardy greens and sweet berries. With key growing states supplying fresh options, home cooks can easily find ingredients for hearty soups, vibrant salads, and bright desserts. Markets will continue featuring many of these items well into early spring.
