India's Kharif Crop Sowing Surpasses 1121 Lakh Hectares

India's agricultural landscape is witnessing significant changes, with Kharif crop sowing surpassing 1121 lakh hectares this season. Meanwhile, sugarcane cultivation has maintained a positive trajectory, with the area under cultivation increasing to 59.07 lakh hectares.

The expansion in coarse cereals sowing has been particularly notable, reaching 194.67 lakh hectares. This is driven by a sharp 12.6% rise in maize to 94.95 lakh hectares. The government's push to promote nutri-cereals for better food security and nutrition is evident in these trends. Rice continues to dominate Kharif cropping, with acreage rising to 441.58 lakh hectares.

Pulses recorded moderate growth, reaching 120.41 lakh hectares, with Urad (black gram) registering a 6.5% increase. However, the oilseed sector faced setbacks, with the total sown area falling to 190.13 lakh hectares, and soybean acreage dropping by 9.10 lakh hectares.

These shifts in cropping patterns reflect market prices, climatic conditions, and government initiatives. Despite the uncertainty in specific regions like Balotra in Rajasthan, where exact 2025 cultivation data is not yet available, the overall trend shows a dynamic and evolving agricultural landscape in India.
