Hard Rock to Transform Uruguay’s Carmelo Hotel Into a Luxury Resort by 2026
The Carmelo Hotel & Casino in Montevideo, Uruguay, has found a new owner after a government-approved tender. Hard Rock International secured the bid and plans to transform the property into a five-star luxury resort by 2026. The project has received strong backing from local and national officials.
The Uruguayan government finalised the tender conditions for the state-owned Carmelo Hotel and Casino, which operated under a casino licence until June 2020. The winning bidder, Hard Rock International, will take over the site and carry out extensive renovations.
The redevelopment will turn the property into a high-end resort featuring a hotel with over 100 rooms, a 500-seat convention hall, and a restaurant serving both local and international dishes. Additional amenities will include a heated swimming pool and a 200-metre dock for yachts and small boats. The casino will also be restored as part of the project.
Mario Colman, deputy for Colonia, called the approval of the tender documentation ‘very good news for Carmelo’. President Luis Lacalle Pou has also expressed support, stating that the project will attract private investment to the region. Construction is scheduled to begin soon, with the resort set to reopen in November 2025.
The renovated Carmelo Hotel & Casino will reopen as a luxury destination under Hard Rock International’s management. The resort’s new facilities, including a large convention hall and marina, aim to boost tourism and local business. Officials expect the project to bring long-term economic benefits to the area.
