Hanau's Mayor Backs Defense Ministry's Plan to Use Underwood Barracks for Military Purposes
Hanau's Mayor Claus Kaminsky has voiced support for the Defense Ministry's decision to use the former Underwood Barracks for military purposes. The 6.1-hectare site, currently housing Ukrainian refugees, is one of 13 Hessian locations earmarked for the Bundeswehr as part of a strategic property reserve.
The Underwood Barracks, administered by the Bundesanstalt für Immobilienaufgaben (BImA), was initially planned for civilian reuse. However, the recent need to expand the air forces has led to its reconsideration for military use. Minister Boris Pistorius has confirmed the suitability of the site for the Bundeswehr.
Mayor Kaminsky understands the necessity of this decision and has pledged to maintain close dialogue with the BImA and the Defense Ministry. The city aims to ensure that the current use of the barracks for refugees remains unaffected and to gain long-term clarity about the site's future.
The former Underwood Barracks in Hanau will potentially serve the air forces, with the city and the Defense Ministry working together to balance military needs with the current use for refugees. The future of the site remains under discussion.
