Guernsey's Dialysis Unit Struggles With Staffing and Supply Chain Issues

Guernsey's dialysis unit is facing multiple challenges, including staffing issues and supply chain problems, which have led to remote support from London's Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. The Health and Social Care (HSC) department is reviewing local consumables delivery and planning major flooring works, which will further impact operations.

Staffing problems have been persistent since the matron's departure in August 2024. The unit has relied on increased agency staff due to long-term sickness. The HSC department is currently supporting the unit's operation, but upcoming refurbishments promise additional challenges.

Supply chain issues are also affecting the unit. Guy's & St Thomas' is experiencing difficulties getting critical consumables to Guernsey. HSC is reviewing whether consumables should be delivered locally to address these issues. Patients requiring treatment in Alderney are expected to relocate to Guernsey for the duration of their treatment.

HSC will fund patient travel and accommodation for the first two months, after which patients must register with population management for further support. The dialysis unit's future operation will depend on addressing staffing issues, supply chain problems, and the impact of planned refurbishments.
