Germany’s holiday campaigns bring joy to thousands in need this season
The holiday season has brought warmth to many in need across Germany this year. Several initiatives have stepped up to grant wishes and deliver gifts to those facing hardship. From students to homeless individuals, thousands have received support through campaigns like Wishing Star and StreetBLUES.
Bielefeld University and the von Bodelschwingh Foundation Bethel launched the Wishing Star Campaign, inviting residents to share their wishes on a 'wishing tree' at the university. In 2024, the campaign fulfilled 1,700 wishes, with participation open to students and the public both in-person and online at aktion-wunschstern.de.
Meanwhile, the Apple Support Association focused on homeless individuals by collecting personal wishes—such as perfume, shoe vouchers, or smartphones—and matching them with donors. This year, all 20 submitted wishes were granted, creating a festive space for connection. The group ensures every donation goes directly to gifts, with operational costs covered separately. For children in need, Children in Poverty e.V. ran an online shop where donors could purchase a €30 gift, covering both the present and delivery. Wishes came from a broad network or were submitted by eligible parents online. Other major organisations also joined the effort. The Deutsche Rotes Kreuz (DRK), Caritas, and Diakonie distributed gifts and support to struggling families, often working with local campaigns like Weihnachten im Herzen.
These initiatives have made the holiday season brighter for thousands. Gifts ranged from small luxuries to essential items, all funded directly by donors. The campaigns will continue to rely on public support to help those in need in the years ahead.
