G2E Las Vegas 2021 Defies Covid-19 Fears with Strict Safety Rules

The Global Gaming Expo (G2E) Las Vegas will go ahead this October despite rising concerns over Covid-19. Organisers have announced new safety measures as the event prepares to welcome thousands of attendees. The decision comes after months of cancellations across the conventions industry due to the pandemic.

G2E Las Vegas, North America's largest casino trade show, is scheduled for October 5–8. In 2019, the event drew over 27,000 gaming professionals and exhibitors from more than 150 countries. This year, however, the gathering faces challenges as Covid-19 cases continue to climb.

Reed Exhibitions, the event's organiser, has formed a health and safety task force to address risks. New policies will include adjusted layouts for physical distancing, mandatory health screenings, and stricter sanitation protocols. The move follows warnings from experts about a potential second wave of infections in the autumn. The Las Vegas Convention Center had expected to host 1,600 exhibitions in 2020. But from March onwards, 64% of conventions nationwide were cancelled due to the pandemic. Nevada itself reported its highest daily increase in Covid-19 cases just two weeks after reopening non-essential businesses. Dr. Anthony Fauci has repeatedly urged adherence to social distancing and CDC guidelines to prevent further outbreaks. The conventions industry plays a major role in Nevada's economy, contributing $9.8 billion in 2017. Nationally, it added over $101 billion to US GDP in 2019. The cancellation of so many events this year has left a significant financial gap.

G2E Las Vegas will proceed with enhanced precautions in place. The event's success could signal a cautious return for large-scale conventions. But with Covid-19 cases still rising, organisers and attendees will face ongoing challenges in the months ahead.
