Fausto Valdez wins LAPC Commerce Classic 2026 after controversial poker fold

Fausto Valdez took home the top prize at the LAPC Commerce Classic 2026, winning $252,840. The tournament made headlines after a controversial hand where Duey Dong folded a flush, unaware it would have split the pot among the top finishers. The incident has sparked debate over whether players should intervene in such situations.

The drama unfolded at the final table when Dong mishandled his cards. His folded hand—a flush—would have tied with Erick Ordonez's set of queens, resulting in a chop. Instead, Dong finished 6th, while Ordonez went on to place 2nd in the ncaa tournament-style event.

Tournament director Matt Savage later clarified the rules. He explained that dealers are trained to discard folded hands and only announce the board if both players show their cards. Had another player informed Dong of his mistake, Savage noted, Dong would have been entitled to half the pot.

The incident has drawn comparisons to past high-profile errors. Phil Ivey famously misread hands in the WSOP Main Event in both 2009 and 2019. Meanwhile, opinions remain divided among players. Jared Griener argued that opponents should stay silent, while Derek Kwan insisted the 'cards speak' rule should apply.

The LAPC Commerce Classic 2026 featured a $5,000,000 guaranteed prize pool, with $1,000,000 distributed among the top nine finishers. Organiser PokerGO has hosted similar large-scale events, including the PokerGO Cup 2023 ($10,000,000 guarantee) and Super High Roller Bowl IX 2024 ($3,000,000 guarantee).

The tournament concluded with Valdez as champion, but the discussion over Dong's fold continues. The case highlights the fine line between gamesmanship and fairness in poker. Rules and player conduct will likely remain a talking point in future among us events.
