Fairfax County eyes a casino resort to boost its post-pandemic economy

Fairfax County could soon see a major casino resort if a new proposal moves forward. State Senator James Marsden plans to introduce legislation for a public vote on the project. The aim is to revive the local economy by attracting visitors and creating jobs.

The proposed casino resort would sit in Tysons Corner, a busy shopping area near the Maryland border. Marsden chose this spot for its easy access to the Silver Line Metro and Dulles Airport, which could bring in more customers.

The development would feature more than just gambling. Plans include a convention centre, concert hall, and hotel. Marsden argues that Fairfax County should not miss out on gaming revenue, especially as neighbouring areas benefit from similar projects.

The idea comes as the county faces economic struggles after the pandemic. Marsden sees the casino as a realistic way to generate tax income and support local employment. If approved, the referendum would let residents decide whether to move forward with the plan.

The proposal now waits for legislative action. If passed, Fairfax County voters will have the final say on the casino resort. The project could bring new revenue and jobs, but only if residents back it in a referendum.
