Electric scooter injuries skyrocket, with child cases doubling in a year
Injuries from electric scooters and e-bikes have surged dramatically in recent years. A new report by Eridehero shows hospitalisations linked to these vehicles rose nearly fivefold between 2016 and 2024. The sharpest increase came in 2024, with child injuries more than doubling in just one year.
The latest data reveals that electric scooter injuries alone jumped by 80% from 2023 to 2024. Young people aged 15 to 24 suffered the highest number of accidents, though children under 15 saw the steepest rise. Males were significantly more likely to be injured than females.
The data underscores a clear rise in electric scooter-related harm, particularly among young riders. With injuries climbing sharply each year, safety measures and public awareness may need urgent review. The figures also suggest a need for further research into accident prevention.
