Decatur Bridge Renovation Begins: Key Traffic Link Set to Reopen in 2026
The renovation of the Decatur Bridge over the Maschen-Marschlagerbahnhof is underway, with the first phase focusing on the Hörsten-side section. The bridge, which has been closed since 2016, connects the districts of Maschen and Hörsten and serves as a key traffic node for the region. The project is being carried out by König GmbH and is expected to reopen in 2026.
The bridge spans Europe’s largest marshaling yard and is set to serve as a detour route during A1 bridge repairs in 2027. Despite rising construction prices, both the timeline and budget for the renovation remain on track, with Seevetal investing over €50 million. The state of Lower Saxony is covering roughly 75% of the costs.
The renovation work is proceeding with minimal disruption to train operations. A unique method of working from above is being employed to ensure the bridge's continued functionality during the upgrade. The bridge's weight is being reduced by 30% by replacing heavy reinforced-concrete beams with hybrid lightweight-concrete versions.
The Decatur Bridge renovation is progressing steadily, with the first stage focusing on the Hörsten-side section. The bridge's reopening in 2026 will provide a crucial detour route during A1 bridge repairs in 2027. Despite challenges, the project remains on schedule and within budget, with Seevetal and the state of Lower Saxony sharing the costs.
