DASH and WMATA secure $14.9 million for Alexandria transit projects
Northern Virginia is set to improve its public transport network with a major funding boost. The Commonwealth Transportation Board approved a $39.5 million investment on 24 June 2025 to expand bus services in Alexandria and the wider region. The changes aim to cut congestion and speed up travel for thousands of daily commuters.
A total of $11.8 million will go to DASH, Alexandria’s local bus service. This funding ensures two key routes—Line 35 and Line 36A/B—remain operational with frequent service. Line 35 will run every 10 minutes on weekdays and every 15 minutes at weekends, while Line 36A/B keeps its 15-minute daily schedule.
WMATA will receive $3.1 million to launch a new bus route, the A29, and upgrade an existing one, the A25. The A29 will provide rush-hour trips from Van Dorn Street Station to downtown Washington, D.C. Together, these improvements are projected to support around 3,800 extra daily transit trips along the I-395/95 corridor. The plans were shaped by public feedback, with over 450 responses during the consultation period. Most comments backed the proposals, which are expected to save more than 53,000 hours of travel time each year. They will also reduce vehicle miles travelled by nearly 22 million annually.
The funding will expand bus services and ease traffic pressure in Northern Virginia. The new and upgraded routes are designed to offer faster, more reliable journeys for commuters. The changes follow months of public input and will take effect in the coming months.
