Cornwall's Homeshare Scheme Eases Housing and Care Crises Together

Cornwall Council has expanded a scheme to tackle both the housing crisis and care shortages in the region. The Supportmatch Homeshare programme pairs people needing affordable accommodation with those requiring support at home. Launched in September 2022, it now helps dozens of households across the county.

The initiative works by matching individuals who need care with those seeking cheaper rent. In return for discounted housing, participants provide 10 to 15 hours of practical help and companionship each week. Extensive safeguarding checks are carried out before any matches are confirmed.

One beneficiary, an 84-year-old woman from Par, has received emotional support and daily assistance through the scheme. By early 2026, around 50 households had been successfully paired, easing pressures on both housing and social care.

The programme comes at a time when rising mortgage rates, announced by the Bank of England, are adding to financial strain. Officials say the scheme helps those struggling with mental health and financial stress due to the cost-of-living crisis.

Supportmatch Homeshare offers older or vulnerable residents a way to stay independent while providing younger people with affordable housing. The council continues to monitor its impact as demand for both care and accommodation grows. The scheme remains open to new applicants across Cornwall.
