Cordish Companies secures second Pennsylvania sports betting licence for expansion

The Cordish Companies has secured approval to buy a second sports betting licence in Pennsylvania. This move allows the firm to expand its iGaming partnerships across its two Live! Casino properties. Online gaming has already become a key revenue driver in the state, with online casino games generating over $240 million in the first five months of 2021 alone.

Cordish first entered Pennsylvania's sports betting market in October 2019 after purchasing a $10 million licence. The company now operates Live! Casino Pittsburgh, a smaller Category 4 venue that launched in November 2020 with 750 slot machines, 30 table games, and a FanDuel-run sportsbook. Its larger resort, Live! Casino Hotel Philadelphia, opened in January 2021 as a full-scale Category 2 casino.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) recently greenlit Cordish's request for a second $10 million sports wagering permit. This additional licence enables the company to partner with another iGaming provider, broadening its digital betting offerings. FanDuel currently manages the retail sportsbooks at both Live! locations. Pennsylvania's 2017 Expanded Gaming Act paved the way for sports betting and smaller satellite casinos like Live! Pittsburgh. Since then, online gaming has surged, with digital casino revenue hitting $240.5 million between January and May 2021.

With the new licence, Cordish can now collaborate with a second iGaming operator. This expansion comes as Pennsylvania's online gaming sector continues to grow rapidly. The company's two Live! casinos will benefit from increased sports betting options under the updated agreement.
