BetMGM cracks down on gambler harassment targeting athletes and teams

BetMGM has updated its terms of service to shield athletes, coaches, and team staff from gambler harassment. The move follows rising concerns over threats directed at sports professionals by betting customers. One high-profile case involved Boston Red Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito, who received abuse after a poor performance.

In recent years, incidents of gambler harassment have grown more frequent. Since 2022, at least five German and Austrian sports organizations—including the DFB women's national team, Eintracht Frankfurt, FC Bayern München, Rapid Wien, and the Handball Bundesliga—have reported similar cases. Players and coaches faced threats, often tied to betting losses.

BetMGM's previous terms already permitted account suspensions for harassment, but the new policy spells out clearer protections. The updated rules explicitly allow suspensions for abusive behaviour towards athletes or team personnel. Rhea Loney, the company's Chief Compliance Officer, stressed that BetMGM will act firmly against confirmed harassment to uphold sports integrity.

The company also runs the GameSense programme, which promotes responsible gambling through educational messaging in 10 US football stadiums. Despite these efforts, concerns remain. Giolito has warned that stronger measures might only come after a serious incident forces action.

The policy change aims to reduce harassment while reinforcing player safety. BetMGM's updated terms now provide a direct framework for addressing abusive behaviour. Meanwhile, athletes like Giolito continue to highlight the risks posed by unchecked gambling-related threats.
